Before we begin, lets talk a little bit about shea butter.
What is Shea Butter?
Shea butter is made from the seeds of the Mangifolia tree, which can only be found in the continent of Africa. And like most other body butters, shea butter stimulates the skin and has the ability to boost moisture levels. This makes it perfect for skin moisturizers and also good for partial sun protection.
How to Make Shea Butter lotion
Now that we have that out of the way, lets talk a little bit about wh you might want to make your own homemade shea butter lotion. One reason could be because it’s cheaper to make your own than buy from the stores. Secondly you get to make yours with a better quality shea butter than most lotions on the market. And it is fun to make and since you’re making it, you know exactly whats in your lotion and can do whatever you want with it.
Homemade Shea Butter Recipe
You will need the following ingredients:
- Unrefined Natural Shea Butter. (make sure it’s not bleached and it’s chemical free)
- Honeysuckle Fragrance Oil or Lemon Fragrance Oil (optional)
- 4 oz of Grapeseed or Almond Oil
- A Vitamin E Capsule
- 1 tsp of Cornstarch
- Some Iced Water
- 2 Inches of Distilled Water
- Put the 2 inches of distilled water into a pot, turn on the stove flame to meduim and place the pot on it. Bring it to simmer. Now take the shea butter and place it in a meduim pyrex or stainless steel bowl. Place it over the pot with the water (Now it should look like its a double boiler.)
- Allow the shea butter to melt. After its melted then add the 4 ounces of grapeseed or almond oil. You can choose to mix them both and then add. It’s really your choice but make sure it all equals to 4 ounces.
- Now take the tsp of cornstarch and add it to the shea butter. Take the vitamin E capsule and open it, then add the contents into the shea butter as well. Now if you feel like, you can also add a bit of the lemon fragrance or honey suckle, the shoice is yours. Adding fragrance is really optional. Now mix the ingredients together.
- Take a big bowl and put in some ice and then add water, make sure the water is heavily iced. Now take away the stainless steel bowl or pyrex from the pot and place it into the iced water. make sure it’s on top of the ice and aviod water leaking into the mixture.
- Now, here’s another fun part. Get a mixer (a hand mixer) and blend the ingredients together with the meduim setting of the mixer, pretend you are making whipped cream. The reason for this is because as you blend you are bringing consistency into the butter oil. And as you are blending you will notice the concotion is thickening as it gets cooled down.
- After your new concotion looks like it’s whipped cream and some stiff peaks are formed on top of it, then you’re done. Now pick up your bowl or pyrex from the iced out water and transfer into a plastic container for storage. Make sure the container has a tight fitting lid. Keep it refeigirated and it can last for months.
You have just made yourself a homemade shea butter lotion better than what you would buy from a regular store.
